I am discouraged by the lack of interest from mainstream media on this story. How do I introduce this to my friends and family if I the media they trust doesn't cover this story? They will assume the WPATH files are just a right wing conspiracy. I also wish Helen Joyce were still at The Economist to have written more critically.
I’ve only read about 35 pages into the 242 page files so far, over two nights… I have to put it down because it’s so frightening.… it’s just so heartbreaking, though not surprising because we know WPATH is doing harm to children, but it’s just this feeling of oh my god… here’s the proof. Finally. I’m so glad this has come out, and I hope we see major changes to the system now because of it, and I hope that WPATH rapidly deteriorates henceforth.
Thank you for all your hard work to make these files to be seen and heard from the public. For the worried parents like me, this is not a surprise, but again, it is very disgusting, painful, and disturbing to read the correspondence, to hear them talking without a slightest concern for the kids. It is pure evil, It will be a long fight, as not only WPATH is invloved, Governments, Universities, Medical specialists associations. I just hope for courage of the ones that should speak but stayed silenced all these years, and bring justice for the victims and normal life for our children, and families, based on reality and common sense.
I listened to Blocked and Reported with Jesse Singal's take on the WPATH files. In sum, the files were journalistically problematic and would have required too much research to conduct fair reporting. He also didn't like the leaker.
Here is my response:
Yes, anyone steeped in transgender issues wouldn't have learned much from the WPATH files report, but it was a confirmation of everything we have imagined or lived in our own families.
And yes, SOC8 revealed a lot of nuttiness, but the standards were wrapped in a veneer of medical advice supposedly based on evidence. SOC8 was not questioned by mainstream media. As gender critical folks have been pointing out, anyone can join WPATH for a small fee. This has led to a takeover of WPATH by activists, some of whom are medical and mental health professionals. Activists should not claim to be dispensing medical advice much less standards of care that have evolved radically leading to the departure of more cautious physicians.
I found Mia Hugh’s report to be insightful and comprehensive although it seems more of an advocacy piece. At least her advocacy is based on evidence.
There is something truly horrifying about seeing the discussion of challenges to obtaining informed consent from minors, the mentally ill, and parents who don´t have an understanding of the medical risks. But those of us deep in transgender issues knew that the evidence base for gender affirmation was weak because we’ve seen many European countries rollback medicalization for minors while it has become yet another red-blue issue.
I too wondered if the video excluded pushback from someone in the Zoom call, but I saw them muddle through discussion of detransition as part of a “gender journey” – these WPATH members are true believers.
This reporting/advocacy piece could have gone mainstream, so we could have a reasonable discussion of gender transition here on the Left Coast.
Ask any deferment baby from the late 60s, our dads knew the US was losing the Vietnam war long before the leak of the Pentagon Papers.
I would be very interested in Sasha and Stella's analysis of the discussion around "plural" (DID) persons and trans ideology. That part of the files seemed particularly other-worldly to me.

Also, this video made me question my sanity:
